Lists are not as responsive, they don’t have the rubber banding effect (going past the end of a list should act like a spring but in web apps it’s not the case). The confirmation dialogs are non native and they look weird. Pretty much they dumbed down everything.Īnd regarding the platform integration, being a web app, it doesn’t respond to user input as we would expect. They also removed 1Password mini that allowed using it much faster without opening the main app. They also removed licenses and are forcing using a subscription and their own cloud to store everything. With this new version they also removed local vaults, the ability to sync vaults between computer and phone with wi-fi, the ability to sync vaults with Dropbox, iCloud etc. Also Electron has had a lot of security problems in the past and that’s very bad for an app that has security as its main focus. The disadvantage here are that the app takes about 3 times the size on disk and uses at least twice as much RAM and more CPU than a native app. This also means the app comes with a copy of chrome bundled.

This helps them having a unified code base but this means that it’s much harder to adapt to platform specific changes. This app is a complete rewrite in a web technology called Electron.
They just announced the preview of next generation app, 1Password 8. We too feel disrespected, disappointed and betrayed. If you feel my message is disrespectful, know this.

If I’m getting a bad password manager, at least I’m getting a cheaper one with your competitors. If that’s not going to happen, you leave us no other option but to cancel our subscriptions and leave.

I’m a software engineer too and I know the trade offs of cross platform clients. Be it an AppKit app or a Catalyst app made from the iPad version. I understand the 1P8 is better on the other platforms, but the mac has always been the mac and deserves it’s own native client. 💙ġPassword was always on a league of its own on the mac and it deserved the price, now it’s all like the other apps.
